The pain was always there. He tried to ignore it but it would not relent. In his dream state he imagined he could sleep long enough to outlast it, but it was still there when he woke. Why won’t it go away? he thought. Why isn’t this over with? He refused to give in to it. He refused to open his eyes. To do so would be to concede to it, to admit to it.

Now that he was more aware, he realized he could not open his eyes. The right eyelid felt like it was sealed shut, but the left eye felt like it had been replaced with a burning coal. As he fully woke, the pain grew more intense, building until he was ready to shout in anger.

Shouting might prove difficult too, for he noticed trouble with his breathing. His chest ached and he was only able to take short, shallow breaths. If he tried any harder he would hear a wheezing sound in his chest. He slowly raised his left arm, bringing his hand close to his face. He feared the result, but he simply had to feel why his face felt so hot and sore. He tried to be as delicate as he could, bringing his fingers closer and closer. What his fingertips met felt soft and wet.

Is that my face? he thought in alarm. Or was it, more likely, something on his face? He pressed a little harder, and as soon as his fingertips touched his eyelid a volcanic surge of pain ripped through his skull. This time he did cry out.

And now his fingertips began to burn.

Gritting his teeth, panting so loud it sounded like whimpering, he used his right hand to attempt touching the right side of his face. Thankfully, this was not as bad. In fact, gently rubbing the area, he was able to coax the eyelid open and he got his first look at his surroundings.

He was in a cave. He was against one wall, on a smooth ledge of rock. He vaguely remembered an explosion, and the thought occurred to him that he’d gone right through a rock wall and was inside some mountain. But no, this room-sized cave was lit with torches. He must have been brought here.

“Hello?” he called out, trying to ignore the painful vibrations in his head brought about by speaking. His limited vision throbbed. He used his right elbow to prop himself up, but the strain hurt his chest. He sank back in a swoon, with a loud gasp. What is this? he thought. What has happened to me? He had shattered the Fängelsten, had he not? He should have unleashed great armies, gained incredible power… Why was he whimpering in the dark, feeling like a prisoner?

“Hello?” he tried again, but the pain washed over him and overwhelmed him. The fingertips of his left hand still felt hot. What is on my face that would do that?

He was lying on some hard surface –– he could tell that.
